Fleshing

From Tardis Wiki, the free Doctor Who reference

Fleshing was the illegal process of overwriting an existing positronic brain with the memories of a dead human as a way to bring the latter back from the dead, and adding mental blocks to prevent the thusly-resurrected person from noticing that they were now in an android body or from remembering their death.

After the tragic death of his daughter Emily in a fire, Caldin Corrigan paid for her fleshing by the Bhor'Vhali of Gand City, placing the brainwashed positronic consciousness in an expensive Mark Nine avatar. He edited the "new" Emily's memories to erase the fire, and her deceased mother, so that she would not find out the truth. However, the android Emily struggled with dysmorphia and an unplaceable feeling of malaise, soon becoming estranged from Corrigan. Corrigan bought a second positronic brain, Christian, with the intent of trying the process again and creating a third Emily, but he couldn't go through with it and simply kept Christian on as a crewmember. Eventually, the truth came out while Christian, Emily and Corrigan were trying to escape from the Cyberons on Asteroid GX-923, with Corrigan dying shortly afterwards. Thereafter, Emily thought of herself firmly as a distinct being from the dead Emily, though she was still hesitating on whether to keep the Emily-shaped Mark Nine avatar or not when she attended Corrigan's funeral.
