A guard was on duty at the main gate of the National Institute for Advanced Scientific Research, better known as Think Tank, in the 1970s.

The guard checked Sarah Jane Smith's one-day pass for 4 April when she arrived, and was still on duty when a suspicious Sarah returned to Think Tank (her pass still being valid, albeit for ten minutes) and told him she had left her notebook in one of the work areas.
