Inbetween was a Kang term for the middle-aged.

When war broke out, all the inbetweens were conscripted — except for the Caretakers who, it would appear, were exempt from military service. A cowardly young man named Pex avoided this by hiding aboard a Kang ship headed for Paradise Towers.
