John was a mineralogist on Captain Maitland's ship in the 28th century.

The mineralogist aboard Captain Maitland's ship, John was in a relationship with Carol Richmond and promised to marry her upon their return to Earth. He became aware of the presence of molybdenum on the Sense Sphere and excitedly thought about how a fleet of spaceships could transport the mineral home. This excitement broadcast his thoughts to the Sensorites, who used their powers to put Maitland and Carol to sleep.
John, his mind being opened by his excitement, received the full extent of the Sensorites' powers and was driven insane. He was eventually calmed by Susan Foreman and Barbara Wright and the Sensorite scientists agreed to restore his mind on the Sense Sphere. His open mind saw evil in the City Administrator. John's mind was eventually restored and, with Susan's help, he identified the Sensorite plotting against the humans, the City Administrator. He was allowed to return to Earth. (TV: The Sensorites)

The Sensorites' attack left John looking gaunt and emaciated with bulging, maniacal eyes. Barbara though he looked like a frightened boy. (PROSE: The Sensorites)
