Professor Sir Rupert Silverman was a highly respected physicist, and the father of Toby Silverman. He did not approve of his son "dabbling in the paranormal", as Sarah Jane Smith put it. Toby called his viewpoint "shortsighted", and sought to prove himself to his father by proving the existence of ghosts and an afterlife.
