Shanks was a worker at the workhouse where Thomas Brewster was sent to live after his mother's death in 1851. The Fifth Doctor and Nyssa once came to talk to Brewster about his dreams. Shanks later gave Brewster into an apprenticeship of Mr Creek. (AUDIO: The Haunting of Thomas Brewster)
