The Art of War was a military text by Sun Tzu. The Fourth Doctor owned one of his original handwritten manuscripts.
According to the Doctor, the book's first rule professed that "It's a greater honour to defeat the enemy without resorting to battle." He once tried to convince Sun Tzu to make that thought a longer paragraph, so that readers would not ignore it. The Doctor likened this idea to a quote by Bruce Lee, calling it "the art of fighting without fighting". (PROSE: The Shadow of Weng-Chiang)
