The Lord of the Rings was a book series by J. R. R. Tolkien.
I.M. Foreman had been reading The Lord of the Rings shortly before meeting the Eighth Doctor. She said that it was very long, but she liked the final line. When the Doctor mentioned travelling with someone named "Sam", Foreman was reminded of a character from Rings. The Doctor, for his part, was reminded that Fitz had been talking about Rings. - Film trilogy The Lord of the Rings based on J. R. R. Tolkien's work was directed by Peter Jackson. Ian McKellen portrayed one of the main characters in both trologies, a wizard named Gandalf. The cast also included Kiran Shah.
- The filming of The Hobbit was referenced several times in the 50th anniversary story, The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot. Furthermore, one scene from the set featuring Peter Jackson and Ian McKellen dressed as Gandalf appears in the story.
- Several episodes of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power TV series were directed by Wayne Che Yip. The cast included Lenny Henry, Maxim Baldry and Daniel Weyman.
- Tom Baker was offered the role of Gandalf, but declined, as he didn't want to spend months in New Zealand.
- David Tennant was considered for Thranduil in The Hobbit.
