An untitled mini-episode featuring Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor and Sophie Aldred as Ace was released in 1988 to promote Season 25 of Doctor Who.

On 4 July 2024, the mini-episode was re-released on the announcement trailer for the The Collection box set of Season 25, with upscaled visuals and a period setting.

Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]

1988, somewhere in England.

Sitting by the side of a river, Ace ponders a bracelet around her wrist, with the number 25 attached to it. The Seventh Doctor replies, telling her that it has also been 25 years since he first visited Ace's planet. Ace asks if things have gotten more peaceful, as time has moved on, but he only grins at her, trailing off after saying "well".

Now standing, Ace tells the Doctor that surely, after twenty-five years, it's time for a rest, but to him, it's only time to get started; hooking his umbrella around the crook of her arm, he pulls her into the TARDIS.

"C'mon Ace!"

Cast[[edit] | [edit source]]

(In order of appearance)

Worldbuilding[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • The Doctor claims that, relatively speaking, it has been twenty-five since he first visited Earth.
  • There is a house near the river, and there are many trees.

Notes[[edit] | [edit source]]

  • The re-release on The Collection adds two black cards that reads "1988" and "Somewhere in England", something not present in the original broadcast advertisement in 1988 on BBC One.
  • Ace's line about resting after twenty-five years seems to be an allusion to the criticism that the series garnered at the time, and the Doctor's reply, "only getting started", is loaded in meta subtext. In bitter irony, the series would only continue for one more season before the cancellation in 1989.
  • The short appears to have been filmed during production of Silver Nemesis [+]Loading...["Silver Nemesis (TV story)"], with the river being the same one the Doctor and Ace dive into to escape the Cybermen's Walkman slaves in that story.
