"One is reminded of George Elliot's Casaubon, his whole dried-up life spent assimilating facts and figures, found dead with his pen in his hand before he's even begun writing his Key to all Mythologies. Perhaps more to the point, one is reminded of Ghost Light's Light, his attempt to catalogue all creation thwarted by the unstoppable constancy of change. You see, you just can't do it. You can't break Doctor Who down to its constituent parts, take its "evil human women" and its NEMESIS, SILVER and stuff them and mount them and hang them like trophies, and expect them to reveal anything of value about the great body of work that spurred you into action in the first place. You could collect a specimen of every last sub-species of butterfly in the world and pin them up in the most exquisite display cabinets money could buy, but I'd swap your whole collection just to see one tortoiseshell fluttering through my garden on a summer's day. Just so, if you gave this idiotic book to someone who'd never heard of Doctor Who, they could read it from cover to cover and still not have the remotest idea what the show's really about. "
