After 24 years of travelling, Marco Polo returned home to find Venice at war with Genoa. He joined the war, but his ship was captured and he was imprisoned. While in prison, Marco dictated his stories to his cellmate who, as the Twelfth Doctor noted, embellished and added some of his own stuff.
