Arthropleurid

Arthropleurid

Arthropleurid, also known as Arthropleura, was a gigantic millipede that lived during the Carboniferous period, around 300 million BCE. Fossilised remains had been found measuring 1 to 2.5 metres, but some speciments may have grown even larger. Arthropleura lived in the wet swamps, feeding on plant matter like bark, as well as small vermin and whatever carrion it could find. The creatures were amphibious, capable of breathing under water and swimming with great speed. They had no known predators, making them over-confident and aggressive hunters; even though they fed primarily on plant matter, their jaws were strong enough to snap a human leg in two.
