Shades of Piccolo was a prose story published in DWM 80 written by Richard Landen. It was framed as an in-universe memorandum written by UNIT Commander in Chief James Neville-Thorndike, detailing the history of UNIT for the benefit of incoming Commander of the British Branch, Brigadier Charles Crichton.

- This marks the first mention of Charles Crichton, who would debut in TV: The Five Doctors [+]Loading...["The Five Doctors (TV story)"] three months later. While he is addressed as "Brigadier" in this story, he would only be a Colonel when he eventually appears.
