When Prince Charles visited the set, apparently the costume designer showed him John Hurt's and told him it was a version of the Doctor we never saw somewhere between the Eighth and Ninth versions. I don't know exactly where that was reported, but if it isn't a red herring, I'd say it has some grounding.
