: It's very confusing, but the text of the story says that all of these Doctors/companions have been pulled out of the Doctor's time stream, that they are their respective characters, but they sometimes hold a shared memory. So [[Melanie Bush]] is pulled out of time, but also remembers physically being [[Ace]] moments before. It's a mess, as we all know, but I think that's the intent of the story.
