A student was an individual obtaining an education, usually at a school, college, university, or other academic institution.

In the United Kingdom, students often wore uniforms which bore the logo and colours of the schools they attended. A university student was an individual who studied at a university.
Unlike school and college students, university students usually studied just one subject. They were often referred to as a student of their chosen subject, for example both Liz Shaw (TV: Spearhead from Space [+]Loading...["Spearhead from Space (TV story)"]) and Martha Jones studied medicine and were therefore referred to as "medical students". A student in their first year of university could be referred to as a fresher.
