Publisher's summary[[edit] | [edit source]]
A loose thread on his spectacular coat ties the Doctor and Mel into complicated knots. With an obstreperous otter and assorted cloned bureaucrats on their coat-tails, they have to unravel a multitude of scams and schemes to get the Doctor's coat – and his TARDIS – back.
Plot[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Doctor and Mel arrive on Kolpasha to get a loose thread on the Doctor's coat fixed at S. Holtons, but they find the city empty. Three months later, the two of them meet up at the spaceport and discuss how Mel had to work as a janitor to make money to pay Holtons, how she gave it all to a six-foot otter when the Doctor accidentally stole his profits and a T-shirt and how the Doctor has since used the profits to pay for the SS Signey shuttle to Golm where the TARDIS has been impounded. Their movements are watched by the various Ernold clones, one of whom places a microcircuit tracker on the Doctor.
The SS Signey is hijacked by a student who intends to take everyone aboard to Evenni to be ransomed to their homeworlds, a scheme which the Helios Fleet is likely in on, but another student accidentally damages the controls with his blaster and the Doctor has to repair them. For saving the shuttle and getting everyone to Golm, the Doctor is awarded money from the Helios Fleet which he uses to pay S. Holtons. He confronts the Ernolds at Transwarp Collection Inc. for placing the tracker on him and has the TARDIS returned, but the otter and his mercenaries, Lloyd and Connor, attack.
The Doctor and Mel claim not to have taken any money from the otter and Lloyd and Connor admit that they do not know for sure that any money has gone missing. The otter and his bodyguards leave by transmat to check the surveillance at the shop and the Doctor and Mel threaten to expose the Ernolds' agreement with the Helios Fleet to claim that their transmats are unsuitable for organic matter. The Doctor reclaims his coat from S. Holtons and returns the money to the otter's safe before leaving Kolpasha with Mel, who thinks about the many ways that she would like to get rid of the coat.
