Kithriarch was a title in Time Lord society given to the head of each of the families of the Great Houses (NA: Lungbarrow). The Kithriarch was not the same as the Housekeeper who was responsible for the well-being of the House itself. The Kithriarch was responsible for the social well-being of each family member.
The position of Kithriarch was retained through regenerations. At the time of the Kithriarch's final death, he would name his successor.
- The following is purely speculation which may be disproved in the future.
Although the only known Kithriarch (and his chosen successor) were male, there is nothing to indicate a woman could not hold this title. However, it is strongly implied that only a woman could be a Housekeeper, and as the roles of Housekeeper and Kithriarch go hand-in-hand, Kithriarch most likely was a role filled only by men.
