Ray Holman was costume designer for the first three series of Torchwood. After being the costume designer for the double banked Doctor Who episodes, Turn Left and Blink, he succeeded Louise Page on Doctor Who as the head of the parent programme's costume department at the start of series 5. He thus became the first man in charge of the department since the BBC Wales version began. His most ubiquitous contribution to the Doctor Who universe was the design of the Eleventh Doctor's series 5 costume. He was succeeded by Barbara Kidd, who took over the department from the 2010 Christmas special.
At the same time he was employed on Doctor Who, he was also costume designer for Sherlock, a co-creation of Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, produced by Sue Vertue in Cardiff for BBC Wales.
