Henry Wittington Smythe was supposedly an old Major, but in reality a Field Marshal, who stayed in the Carstairs hotel on the planet Chelsea 426. He had fought in many wars and even encountered the Sontarans once before. During the Rutan/Sontaran war he was evacutated to the Doctor's TARDIS, as were Jake and Vienna Carstairs.
