In 1976, a number of things set in or relevant to the Doctor Who universe were released or published.

• January - Nationwide special was first broadcast on BBC1.
• 3 January - The Brain of Morbius Part One debuted on BBC1.
• 10 January - The Brain of Morbius Part Two debuted on BBC1.
• 15 January - Doctor Who and the Loch Ness Monster was first published.
• 17 January - The Brain of Morbius Part Three debuted on BBC1.
• 24 January - The Brain of Morbius Part Four debuted on BBC1.
• 31 January - The Seeds of Doom Part One debuted on BBC1. This was the last serial to feature UNIT in a major way until 1989's Battlefield.
• 7 February - The Seeds of Doom Part Two debuted on BBC1.
• 14 February - The Seeds of Doom Part Three debuted on BBC1.
• 19 February - Doctor Who and the Dinosaur Invasion and Doctor Who and the Tenth Planet were first published, the latter being the first Target Books-commissioned novelisation of a solo First Doctor story (the initial three published in 1973 were in fact reprints of novels first published in the mid-1960s).
• 21 February - The Seeds of Doom Part Four debuted on BBC1.
• 28 February - The Seeds of Doom Part Five debuted on BBC1.
• 6 March - The Seeds of Doom Part Six debuted on BBC1, ending Season 13.
• 18 March - Doctor Who and the Ice Warriors was first published.
• 20 May - Doctor Who - The Revenge of the Cybermen was first published.
• July - Doctor Who and the Pescatons was first released on LP by Argo Records. Discounting educational programmes, this was the first original audio drama based upon the franchise, predating the releases of Big Finish Productions by decades.
• 22 July - Doctor Who and the Genesis of the Daleks was first published.
• 19 August - Doctor Who and the Web of Fear was first published.
• September - The Doctor Who Annual 1977 was published.
• September - Terry Nation's Dalek Annual 1977 was published.
• September - Doctor Who and the Daleks Omnibus was published.
• 4 September - The Masque of Mandragora Part One debuted on BBC1, starting Season 14. This saw the first appearance of the TARDIS's wood-panelled secondary control room.
• 11 September - The Masque of Mandragora Part Two debuted on BBC1.
• 18 September - The Masque of Mandragora Part Three debuted on BBC1.
• 23 September - Doctor Who and the Space War was first published. This adaptation of Frontier in Space was the last Target Books novelisation to use a title significantly different from that of the source material (other than the practice of adding Doctor Who and... to the titles, which remained in place for several more years, and the occasional spelling deviation).
• 25 September - The Masque of Mandragora Part Four debuted on BBC1.
• 2 October - The Hand of Fear Part One debuted on BBC1.
• 4 October - A special radio story featuring Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen was broadcast by BBC Radio as part of its Exploration Earth series. This was the first made-for-radio Doctor Who adventure and the last of its kind until Slipback in 1986.
• 9 October - The Hand of Fear Part Two debuted on BBC1.
• 16 October - The Hand of Fear Part Three debuted on BBC1.
• 21 October - Doctor Who and the Planet of the Daleks was first published. Although not widely recognised, the original serials Frontier in Space and Planet of the Daleks formed one story arc. By Target Books' publishing the adaptation of Frontier (as Doctor Who and the Space War) in September, followed by part 2 this month, these two books predated the two-volume novelisation of The Daleks' Master Plan (widely considered the first occurrence of this).
• 23 October - The Hand of Fear Part Four debuted on BBC1. Elisabeth Sladen left the series. She returned to the series thirty years later in 2006's School Reunion.
• 30 October - The Deadly Assassin Part One debuted on BBC1. The Master returned; this story was also the first (and to date, only) televised serial in which the Doctor did not share an adventure with a companion or even a companion figure.
• 6 November - The Deadly Assassin Part Two debuted on BBC1.
• 13 November - The Deadly Assassin Part Three debuted on BBC1.
• 20 November - The Deadly Assassin Part Four debuted on BBC1.
• 16 December - Doctor Who and the Pyramids of Mars was first published.
• 16 December - The second edition of The Making of Doctor Who was published by Target Books.
• 16 December - The Doctor Who Dinosaur Book was first published.
• 31 December - The Daily Mirror published an exclusive short story, Dr. Who and the Hell Planet; this was the first original Doctor Who short story to be published in a newspaper or outside an annual. The next original newspaper-exclusive short story wasn't published for another thirty years.
• Unknown - Mind your step! was first broadcast at a Doctor Who Blackpool Exhibition.
