Derek Francis (7 November 1923-27 March 1984[1]) played Nero in the Doctor Who television story The Romans. He was the first major actor to ask to be on the show and through his connection with Jacqueline Hill's husband, soon secured the role. William Hartnell was overjoyed to work with him again, having previously worked with him in the Carry On series.
