The "Ingenious Patriot" was a character invented by Ambrose Bierce. His pockets were full of inventions, and he exasperated the King with his tedious descriptions of the benefits of every device. The King ultimately paid the Patriot for all the devices, then had him put to death. (PROSE: The Book of the War)
