Winter Palace

The Winter Palace was a building in St Petersburg. (AUDIO: The Night Witches)

Catherine the Great built it to house her art collection, and successive Tsars and Tsarinas enhanced the building, which was eventually considered to be the most elaborate of the Tsarist Palaces. In 1917, the last Tsar was overthrown and the first Soviet government moved in. (PROSE: The Book of the War)

The Second Doctor, Jamie McCrimmon, Ben Jackson and Polly Wright attempted to visit the Winter Palace in St Petersburg in 1782, but they materialised in the vicinity of Stalingrad in 1942 instead. (AUDIO: The Night Witches)

After Cousin Anastasia founded the Thirteen-Day Republic, the Winter Palace served as its capitol. (PROSE: The Book of the War)
