Castle Dracula was a stronghold of Vlad III which he called "the proudest achievement of [his] reign." It was a tactically important location, which was almost impregnable. Since it was on a high hill overlooking a flat plain, any approaching armies would first have to make themselves vulnerable to archers in the castle ramparts.

After his engagement to Erimem in June 1462, he took the former pharaoh to the castle, which caused the Fifth Doctor and Peri Brown to follow. (AUDIO: Son of the Dragon)

Later, the Doctor compared its basic architecture to that of the Citadel of Peladon. (AUDIO: The Bride of Peladon)
