Kathryn McDonnell was captain of the S.S. Pentallian. Her ship collected energy from a sun, unaware that it was actually a living being and that removal of the energy caused it great pain. The life form, angry with them for mining its heart, sent the ship colliding towards its surface and began killing the crew after taking possession of McDonnell's husband, Korwin, soon followed by Dev Ashton. McDonnell sacrificed herself to save her crew by opening an airlock and sending both herself and her husband drifting towards the sun. (DW: 42)

McDonnell was liked by trainee engineer Erina Lessak for ignoring her "rich kid" upbringing and treating her as just another member of the crew. (WC: 42 Prologue)
