Mariam was a Syran leader. With River Song's agreement, she led the inhabitants of the lakeside settlements away from seismic activity and met the Eighth Doctor, Liv Chenka and Helen Sinclair.

Upon learning of Ruslan's true nature, Mariam took part in the song to prevent him leaving and later assured Madam Yeva aboard a Galactic Heritage ship that New Syra would be a good home, telling her that the Syrans carried their song with them and would survive the loss of their planet. (AUDIO: The Sonomancer)
