A goldsmith migrated from Vienna to the United Kingdom in the 1930s and lived in London. In 1966, he met an alien who asked for his help in repairing his spacecraft, a request that he agreed to, recommending the theft of the Jules Rimet Cup and, later, giving a ransom note.

The First Doctor tracked the goldsmith down by detecting Stein's radiation and told Steven Taylor to follow him. The goldsmith unwittingly led Steven to the warehouse where the aliens and their spacecraft were, after which he told the Doctor, Steven and Dodo Chaplet what he had done and that he would have melted the cup without question to save the aliens' lives. Thanks to the Doctor, the aliens set off and the goldsmith handed over the cup. (AUDIO: This Sporting Life)
