Sonic the Hedgehog is a Japanese video game franchise which debuted in 1991 with the release of the original Sonic the Hedgehog video game on SEGA's Mega Drive console, the success of which spawned a series of countless sequels and offshoots in other media such as television, film, and comic books, becoming SEGA's flagship series.
The series follows the titular character, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds, who takes it upon himself to save the world from the schemes of the evil Dr. Eggman (known as Dr. Robotnik in early western media).
