Kiev was the capital city of Ukraine. The First Doctor, Steven Taylor and Dodo Chaplet visited the city in 1240. (PROSE: Bunker Soldiers)
As Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union during the 20th century, (AUDIO: Thin Ice) Kiev became the site of a battle as part of Nazi Germany's invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941. Huge numbers of Russian soldiers were taken prisoner by the Wehrmacht. (PROSE: Just War)
Behind the scenes
Kiev/Kyiv
In 2018, the KyivNotKiev was launched by the Ukraine Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Kiev was officially renamed Kyiv (in Ukrainian, Київ), to dissociate and diminish the use of Russian-language names for Ukrainian locations, in favour of Ukrainian language names. However, no DWU source has used the name "Kyiv", so, until further notice, the page will stay at "Kiev" as per T:NO RW.
