Aris was one of the Kinda on Deva Loka.

Aris was normally mute, as were all Kinda males, and communicated with the other Kinda by telepathy.
Aris's brother was taken hostage by the human expeditionary force in retaliation for the mysterious disappearances of three of their number. This allowed the Mara to tempt Aris and possess his body. While under its influence, Tegan climbed up a tree and dropped apples on Aris's head. The Mara inside her then exploited Aris's desire for retaliation to transfer itself from Tegan to him. Under the Mara's influence, Aris gained the power of speech.
