Okada Shumei was a former Samurai who rescued Susan Foreman and Ian Chesterton from being captured by Casper Knox. He told Susan and Ian about the ways of Japan. He became a farmer after being dismissed from Takagi Mamoru service. He tried to remain honourable and told them about the ways of Japan. He wanted Japan to open up to the world again. He was in love with Keiko which the reason why he was dismissed. During the battle between Knox and the British forces, Shumei rescued the First Doctor. He helped the Doctor get into the castle to rescue Susan and Barbara Wright before being injured by Knox. Keiko and Shumei escaped during the battle with the Shogun's men.
