Thanks for your recent edits! I'm Jimbo, your robot wiki representative! We hope you'll keep on editing with us. This is actually a great time to have joined, because we're now fully independent, and working on a host of new features!

We've got a couple of important quirks for a fan written wiki, so let's get them out of the way first.

British English, please

We generally use British English 'round these parts, so if you use another form of English, please be sure you set your spell checker to BrEng, and take a gander at our spelling cheat card.

Spoilers aren't cool

We have a strict definition of "spoiler" that you may find a bit unusual. Basically, a spoiler, to us, is anything that comes from a story which has not been released yet. So, even if you've got some info from a BBC press release or official trailer, it basically can't be referenced here. In other words, you gotta wait until the episode has finished its premiere broadcast to start editing about its contents. Please check the spoiler policy for more details.

Other useful stuff

Aside from those two things, we also have some pages that you should probably read when you get a chance, like:

If you're brand new to wiki editing — and we all were, once! —  you probably want to check out these tutorials at Wikipedia, the world's largest wiki:

Remember that you should always sign your comments on talk and vote pages using four tildes like this:

exceeding image limitedit source

Please note that you have exceeded the User image policy. The maximum amount of images a user may have on their User Page is 3. Also note that you will have to remove some of the images (and mark them with proposed deletion). If you do not do this, then some of the images will be deleted by an admin to maintain the 3 image limit. Thanks. Mini-mitch 18:50, August 28, 2010 (UTC)

Help on change the info boxes on the side of pagesedit source

please can you tell me how to change/add information to the side boxes on the sides of pages (i.e. the species boxes) as i have added stuff to the Hoothi page and made a mess of it please if you can't explain can you sort it out for me please

Thanks for that, if possible can you send me a message telling me how to do that so i don't make the same mistake in the future

AdricLovesNyssa

Right, when you edit a page you want an image in, if its rich text editor (posh version) then click on the green box and click edit. from there you have the image box to type in, an example of what to put there is File:Hoothi.jpg|250px with around each side of text. on source edit just paste File:Hoothi.jpg|250px into the image slot in the text based infobox. Revanvolatrelundar 15:22, September 1, 2010 (UTC)

I also mean when entering text as i added the The Company of Friends bit and that was what messed it up AdricLovesNyssa

right ok, i think you mean the link ot a story, if so the simple way to do it is e.g. putting [[]] around the BFA no link around the : and a [[ and over each side of The Company of Friends . Revanvolatrelundar 15:30, September 1, 2010 (UTC)

just moving ths over to your page so that you can get easier acces when you make edits Revanvolatrelundar 15:32, September 1, 2010 (UTC)

Thanks AdricLovesNyssa

BTW the link box on rich text editor has been playing up today and this may have been the cause of some of your link problems. Revanvolatrelundar 15:36, September 1, 2010 (UTC)

Rememeber!edit source

Please remember when creating pages for actors:

  • To insert the correct categories.
  • To insert, in italics, the name of the show they appeared in e.g. Doctor Who
  • The heading external links
    • A link to the character IMDb record OR
    • Stub it as Real world stub.

Thanks. MM/Want to talk? 18:17, December 29, 2011 (UTC)

Categoriesedit source

When creating pages, make sure you add the correct categories. Thanks. MM/Want to talk? 16:38, April 13, 2012 (UTC)

Categoriesedit source

Thanks very much for adding coverage of characters from Big Finish works. This area definitely needs attention. However, please make sure that you are adding categories to newly created pages. If you move on to a new page without properly categorizing the first page, you'll tend to forget to go back and categorize the first page. This, in turn, means the page will kinda get "lost" and end up on Special:UncategorizedPages.
czechout<staff />   15:39: Mon 09 Jul 2012

Spacingedit source

Hi there. Please can you leave a space between the prefix and the story name on articles. I've been through dozens of your edits sorting it out now. It should be (BFA: Zagreus) and not (BFA:Zagreus). Thanks. --Revan\Talk 17:13, July 9, 2012 (UTC)

Whoa there, partneredit source

You've successively created several pages with the exact same error, so I need to block you so that I can explain what you're doing wrong.

In infoboxes, {appearances} is — at least for now — what's called a "non-linking" or "freeform" variable. This allows you to put in several different stories. But you must remember to manually link and italicize them, like this:

|appearances = TV: Colony in Space, The Mind Robber

So if you're going to use that variable:

  1. There must be more than one story
  2. You have to remember to italicize and link the stories

Please make sure you read MediaWiki:Community-corner.

Requestedit source

Hi there. I passed your request onto CzechOut since he his our technical administrator. I hope he can help. --Revan\Talk 20:17, July 13, 2012 (UTC)

Infobox Individualedit source

There's nothing "broken" with this infobox that needs fixing. As the documentation for Infobox Individual makes clear, the {actor} variable expects one and only one answer, so therefore it automatically links the name. The {other actor} variable allows for more than one response, so therefore it requires you to make your own linkages. This is why the text next to "Main actor" in the example infobox is red, while the text next to "Other TV actors" is blue. Red means it's linked (and is finding no article by the name of "Name of the primary actor to play this character on television")

With any of these infoboxes, the example on the documentation page immediately shows you which variables auto-link and which require you to do the linkages manually. There may come a day when I'm able to come up with some way to make all variables auto-link, but don't hold your breath.

For the moment this infobx is working exactly as intended with these variables: forcing editors to pick one thing in some cases, allowing them to enter a more free-formed response in others.

Great Mother (Zagreus)edit source

While editing Great Mother (Zagreus), I noticed that there seems to be a missing clause. As you wrote the article, I would appreciate it if you went in and added the missing bit. Boblipton talk to me 13:24, July 18, 2012 (UTC)

Timeline deletionedit source

Hey, thanks for helping with this. Just so people know why you're deleting it can you leave this Forum:Timeline deletion in the edit summary along with your description. Thanks. --Tangerineduel / talk 15:38, September 5, 2012 (UTC)

Will do, as i have time on my hands before i go to uni. AdricLovesNyssa 15:40, September 5, 2012 UTC

Hey, one quick fix, I included the nowikis around it so you could copy without checking my text. Don't include the no wikis. Just add this: Forum:Timeline deletion. Or if you want to be exact. Deleting Timeline per Forum:Timeline deletion . Thanks. --Tangerineduel / talk 15:50, September 5, 2012 (UTC)
Hey. The link is quite important. Copy and paste it in if you want (it's how I do it). The last few have been redlinking as you've got Forums instead of Forum. It's as I've said so people can follow why you're deleting it. Thanks. --Tangerineduel / talk 16:49, September 5, 2012 (UTC)

Your signatureedit source

Hey, not quite sure what you've done to your siggy. But if you're trying to embolden your own name, it'll be better in the long run if you abandon the <b> tags. Better just to do it with wikitext instead of HTML. So try User:AdricLovesNyssa instead. You might want to give Help:Signature a gander, too.

Imagesedit source

Hey, thanks for trying to add to our library of cover images! Unfortunately most of your recent additions to our BF cover collection had to be deleted because they were over the 100kb max file size. If you'd like to resubmit after reducing their file size to something below 100kb, please feel free. This restriction, not often imposed by wikis, is of great benefit to our mobile users and those with slower bandwidths. Following is a summary of the most important image rules, but please be sure to stop by T:GTI and T:ICC as soon as possible to make sure that your future contributions aren't summarily deleted. Thanks :)

Recent editsedit source

Hi! Quite a few of your recent page creations have had to be edited, and I wanted to give you a couple of suggestions.

  • Please use the "preview" button before you hit " publish". Many of your pages had errors that are easily noticed when previewing the page first, such as minor spelling and grammar errors, forgetting to pipe-switch the title, forgetting to italicize.
  • Please do not pipe-switch a specific incarnation of the Doctor to "the Doctor". This is actually a policy, that you can read about here.

Thanks! Shambala108 15:10, July 11, 2013 (UTC)

Sorry, there's one more thing that I forgot. When a character only appears in one story , use the "only" appearances variable in the infobox. Thanks! Shambala108 15:17, July 11, 2013 (UTC)

Creating new pagesedit source

Hi! I just wanted to remind you that when you create a new page, you need to add at least one category. If you can't think of one, you can do a search at Special:Categories. Please check the categories I added to your recent page creations to see how I've categorized them and verify that they are correct. Thanks! Shambala108 14:43, July 17, 2013 (UTC)

Rat Trap pagesedit source

Hi! Is there a reason you named Kevin (Rat Trap) and Matthew (Rat Trap) with the dab term instead of their last names? In general if a character has a last name we use it as their page name, but I wanted to check with you first before changing it, as I don't have the audio. Thanks! Shambala108 16:12, August 2, 2013 (UTC)

I created the pages as how the red links were on Rat Trap (audio story) before I created the pages. I left them like that as there last names where only said one in the whole of the audio and I rechecked the pronunciation but the spelling I'm not sure off. We can change them if it makes it easier in the catogue of the whole wikia AdricLovesNyssa 16:24, August 2, 2013 (UTC)

Gotcha. For now I'm going to remove the last names, and if you or anyone else get confirmation of the spelling, we can move the pages then. Thanks! Shambala108 00:16, August 3, 2013 (UTC)
I'm gonna countermand Shambala here. The fact that these names are only said once is irrelevant. If they're said, they should be in the name of the article. Dab terms are to be used only as a last resort, when no other name is possible. If you don't know how a last name is spelled, you should make a best guess and then leave a behind the scenes note and say that the fact that the name is only said once on audio makes it difficult to know if the spelling is correct. In a case where spelling of the last name is uncertain, then there's no problem leaving a redirect from Kevin (Rat Trap) to Kevin WhaeteverHisNameIs. But every effort should be made to include at least a reasonable phonetic spelling of their full name, if it's at all said in a story. A wrong, but phonetic, spelling — which is clearly marked as possibly wrong in the behind the scenes section — adds more to the wiki's knowledge base than holding back on the off chance that the script is ever published. Since Big Finish have largely stopped issuing scripts, there's not much chance that we'll ever get an "official" spelling of a newer play like Rat Trap.

Project: Whatever pagesedit source

The template explaining what's up with the missing colon on pages like Project Twilight (audio story) was pointing the issue was pointing to the wrong page. That's now been corrected, and it's easy to get a full explanation by clicking on that link, which takes you now to T:NAMING. Thanks for asking your question, which pointed up the need to fix the link.

Short answer to your question: not possible to fix. Limitation of the software. Project Twilight (audio story) stays where it is.

Proper BF cover templateedit source

When uploading pictures from the covers of Big Finish audios, please take special care to choose the correct licensing template. BF credits is for the credits page only. BF audio cover is the license you were looking for with files like file:Maynard.jpg. In terms of the licensing drop down, you wanted the very first license under audio covers.
czechout<staff />    18:28: Tue 17 Sep 2013

But the images aren't from the covers they are from the centre pages from the inserts. AdricLovesNyssa 18:43, September 17, 2013 (UTC)
If you want a timely response, please don't continue conversations with me on this page; I don't visit your page until and unless I see a message from you on my page. Thus, we won't really have a conversation if you respond here.
To answer this point belatedly, please read the text of BF audio cover. It specifically says it's for images from the cover or "an image that has been taken from the liner notes or bonus booklet accompanying a particular Big Finish release." To us, the cover means the entirety of the thing that's in the front or back slot of the CD case." BF credits is just for the credits themselves. That license template is helping us organise an archive of all the credits pages in Big Finish history, so we don't want it being used for any other purpose. By the way, if you have any BF liner notes, it would be very helpful if you could scan the credits page, or even just take a picture of them with your phone, so that we could build our credits library.

Benny "bug"edit source

It's not really a bug that the un-dabbed name appears in autosuggest, nor does it apply to just Benny stuff. Wikia changed autosuggest to reveal redirects. It appears that their algorithm offers the most-linked thing, when it has to choose between several pages linking to the same article. You're seeing it most profoundly with Benny stuff because virtually no Benny stories actually require the dab term for unique identification. Most of the Benny titles have such fanciful names, no other articles could possibly share them. However, you'll find that if you press on and add just an opening parentheses, autosuggest will indeed show the dabbed term. An additional factor with the Benny stuff is that it largely hasn't been linked. The more links that are made to the dabbed term, the more likely it is that autosuggest will show the dabed term first. That's why you'll find newer episodes of Doctor Who immediately going for the dabbed term. The overwhelming number of links to The Name of the Doctor are to The Name of the Doctor (TV story), so autosuggest pops that version of the page title up, rather than The Name of the Doctor.
czechout<staff />    14:41: Wed 16 Oct 2013

Talk page policyedit source

Hey, I just wanted to let you know that when you reply to a message posted on your talk page, you must reply on the other person's talk page. When you do, that person will get a notification of a message on his page. If you reply on your own talk page, the person will most likely not even know you've answered. So your messages to User:CzechOut will probably not be seen by him unless posted on his page. Thanks! Shambala108 21:59, October 17, 2013 (UTC)

Christmas cheeredit source

Happy holidays!

As this fiftieth anniversary year comes to a close, we here at Tardis just want to thank you for being a part of our community — even if you haven't edited here in a while. If you have edited with us this year, then thanks for all your hard work.

This year has seen an impressive amount of growth. We've added about 11,000 pages this year, which is frankly incredible for a wiki this big. November was predictably one of the busiest months we've ever had: over 500 unique editors pitched in. It was the highest number of editors in wiki history for a year in which only one programme in the DWU was active. And our viewing stats have been through the roof. We've averaged well over 2 million page views each week for the last two months, with some weeks seeing over 4 million views!

We've received an unprecedented level of support from Wikia Staff, resulting in all sorts of new goodies and productive new relationships. And we've recently decided to lift almost every block we've ever made so as to allow most everyone a second chance to be part of our community.

2014 promises to build on this year's foundations, especially since we've got a full, unbroken series coming up — something that hasn't happened since 2011. We hope you'll stick with us — or return to the Tardis — so that you can be a part of the fun!

Character infoboxedit source

Hi, this isn't really an error. Please do not correct main voice actor to voice actor, as that's something that will just have to be changed back. The fact that it doesn't currently display when set to main voice actor is no big deal, and something that will eventually work itself out. The intended name of the variable is main voice actor. Thanks for your report!

Audio questionedit source

Hi! I wonder if you've ever taken a look at Thread:137970, which fizzled out almost a year ago but I just revived. You seem to have a lot of audio stories, and if they're on CD, and you'd like to participate in this project, it would be a great help. You're under no obligation to do so, especially if you're too busy with real world stuff, but if you could help at all we could make a lot of progress in this project. Thanks! Shambala108 15:15, May 27, 2014 (UTC)

Thanks for the quick response!
I don't have any audios myself so I can't be real specific; the forum thread I linked above can probably explain it better. But basically for now we want to collect crew information from the various audio stories, and if we can get enough collected (I think the forum thread specifies about sixty percent of the available stories), then a template will be created and we can use the collected information to fill the template for each audio story.
For now, anyone who has the CD versions of the stories can scan or photograph the crew list from the story booklet and upload it to the wiki. This project is still in the early stages of just collecting the information; hopefully when we have enough it won't take long to create the template and start filling it out.
If you have any questions, just post them at Thread:137970 so that everyone interested in the project can give input. Thanks! Shambala108 17:48, May 27, 2014 (UTC)

Infobox imagesedit source

Hi :) It's unlikely that I'll be adding capacity for a third image to infoboxes, as two images already makes infoboxes quite long. In a case like the one you've cited at The Ghosts of Gralstead, the variations are slight and add little in the way of useful context. Putting value judgements aside, the infobox capacity is limited to two as that's the maximum number required in the vast majority of cases. This multiple cover issue come up on a few other pages, most notably DWM issue pages, and the recommended method in this case is to have a centred gallery at the bottom of the page. See DWM 413 for an example.

The Masteredit source

Hi! I've fixed the issue you addressed at User talk:CzechOut. Instead of altering the template, I changed the section heading back to where it was. In the long run, it's probably better to restore the section headings rather than change the template every time a new user makes a mistake. Thanks for noticing this problem! Mercurialedit source

Hi! I've got a question for you. What can you tell me about the Mercurials from Prisoner of the Sun? I'd like to know what they look like (if the story describes them) and are they native to the planet Mercury? The short story Mercury also has humanoid beings called Mercurials, and it kinda sounds like they aren't the same, but just in case I'd like some clarification. Thanks! Hi! Please make sure that, when you create page titles and/or add text that you've copy-pasted from a Word document, you change the punctuation, such as apostrophes and quotation marks, from Word to wiki text. They are not the same. Thanks! Shambala108 03:46, October 21, 2015 (UTC)

My apologies. I meant to get back to you on this but I had taken a break from the wiki and then forgot about it. The thing is, I made a huge mistake. I assumed that when you created the page Vandermeer (Kronos Vad's History of Earth Vol. 36,379) you copy/pasted from some kind of word document. It didn't even occur to me that you probably created the page from an existing link left by someone else. So my apologies for confusing you and for calling you out on something you didn't do. Varaxilsedit source

Hi again, I really loved working with you on The Silver Turk but felt a bit bad about asking you all the time: I benefited a lot without giving much in return. So I was hesitant to approach you personally about the script of The Witch from the Well. Since you are by now engaged in the story's discussion though, let me try. Do you by any chance have this script too? And, if so, would you have time to verify some spellings, again? I wanted to, at the minimum, fix the page names and create all the appropriate pages. What is now "Lucern" and "Finicia" should be called Lucern Portillon (Varaxil) and Finicia Portillon (Varaxil) respectively (and pages for the human children should be created). However, I am not 100% sure of the spelling of Varaxil. I came to derive this spelling from the pronunciation of Varaxil for the 2nd syllable and of Varax Beta for the 1st syllable. But knowing the spelling from the script would give a definitive answer. Thank you in advance whatever the reply. Amorkuz 12:53, May 27, 2016 (UTC)

Thanks a bunch. It was really clogging my progress. Amorkuz 13:11, May 27, 2016 (UTC)

Even though CzechOut said it's alright to create pages with a wrong name, I am too much a perfectionist to not at least try. So I'm gonna ask a big ask. I'm gonna write all the names I didn't quite catch or am unsure of in The Witch from the Well. If you have time, I'd appreciate a note about their correct spelling:

  • odic and lokic (I suspect these have to do with Odin and Loki)
  • Witch Star (no hyphen?)
  • Whetstone or Wetstone? (this is what Aleister Portillon is an Earl of)
  • Sevilan's Meadow? (where Agnes Bates lived while being an outcast)
  • flux imp (I'm pretty sure about this part, but there were more adjectives, like Faircut? once and then from Fair Corduroy?)
  • Morris (owner of the barn, who was killed by the Varaxils, could also be Wallace?)
  • terillium (material six miles of which was used to imprison odic persons on Varax Beta)
  • Irisi (one of the prisoners in the Varaxil spaceship; the Doctor says something like "Do not bother the Irisi")
  • third trier-up to the Vax sittering (Finicia announces that this was her title on her homeworld. This is closer to the end and I have no idea what she's saying there)

Thanks in advance. Amorkuz 22:00, June 4, 2016 (UTC)

Apart from the thank you, I have to say that sometimes these spellings just blow my mind. How on Earth am I supposed to guess "Third Trierarch to the Varax Citrine". I'm truly speechless. Amorkuz 19:58, June 5, 2016 (UTC)

discoveries thanks to your spellingsedit source

By the way, there are quite fascinating little things hidden in that story. The Erisi is a character from the first BF story written by the same writer. I'm not sure how they relate to each other. Maybe the author intended it as the species name in The Entropy Composition or maybe this particular Erisi managed to escape the Varaxil ship and caused havoc in the 20th century. Secondly, Pherkad is a star in Ursa Minor. It is 487 light-years away from us in reality, whereas the audio gives a 480 light-year estimate. Thanks to you, we got ourselves a new star in DWU! Since this turned out to be a real object, could you please track down the second mention of the flux imp? There it must be something like "from Pher Kadura". Or was it "Pherkadian"? Amorkuz 08:19, June 6, 2016 (UTC)

Erisiedit source

I was just going to post a general information request on the Ref Desk, when I realised that you are actually the leading expert on Erisi too (judging by the page history). I myself do not own The Entropy Composition and would not listen to it anyway because I first watch a Doctor and only then listen to the audios, and I am still on the Third Doctor.

So what do you think could be the connection between Erisi from The Entropy Composition and Erisi in the Varaxil ship? It seems to me from the Wiki description that the former is a proper name, not a species description. The only thing in the Witch is the phrase you found, which is preceded by a laugh, kind of a giggly high pitched laugh. Is a similar laugh familiar from the Entropy? Could the Eighth Doctor recognise the same individual, Erisi, he saw in his fifth incarnation? What do you think?

PS One more thing I wanted to ask. When I post on the Panopticon I tend not to state it was you who was helping me with the scripts. I consider this (ownership of scripts) to be kind of private information that should not be disclosed without permission. On the other hand, it feels like I'm not giving enough credit there. So would you give me such a permission to thank you publicly? Amorkuz 07:32, June 9, 2016 (UTC)

I can't really ask you to relisten. That's a lot of time to be spent on something that may turn out to be a wild goose chase. (It doesn't make sense to relisten to the Witch anyways as the phrase "Please do not disturb the Erisi" is literally the only reference). I hoped you might remember. Amorkuz 23:17, June 9, 2016 (UTC)

Narvinedit source

Do you have the exact quote about who's president? Fwhiffahder 21:56, July 24, 2016 (UTC)

I've just listened to The Death of Hope, and it's definitely not implying that Romana is President. On the contrary, Romana and Narvin are friends, and Romana would agree to an intervention to save people by default, rather than needing convincing. Narvin's "official" reason for saving Hope is that it's way to bribe the Doctor into helping them against the Master. Fwhiffahder 12:41, August 8, 2016 (UTC)
She doesn't have a third incarnation yet/anymore, thanks to Enemy Lines. She steps down from the Presidency in her second incarnation. Fwhiffahder 17:39, August 8, 2016 (UTC)
I really doubt Big Finish would deliberately put a major part of their catalogue like the Dark Eyes series in an alternate timeline, especially since stuff like Night of the Doctor references it.
By the way, I'm listening to The Eleven again, and Romana's definitely no longer president - but whoever is president also favors the Doctor and is trying to strengthen ties with aliens. Fwhiffahder 18:25, August 10, 2016 (UTC)
No, I mean they refer to the aliens in the Academy as a reform of a previous regime, and separately refer to the current regime which has been accommodating to the Doctor. Fwhiffahder 20:58, August 10, 2016 (UTC)
The Dark Eyes series can't be in the Intervention Earth timeline if Doom Coalition isn't - Doom Coalition references the Doctor and Liv's previous adventures many times, and The Night of the Doctor references Molly. Enemy Lines is very clear that the Intervention Earth timeline is completely separated and now unwritten. Fwhiffahder 22:55, August 10, 2016 (UTC)
It's an interesting theory, but it's obviously not what Big Finish intends. Fwhiffahder 19:02, August 11, 2016 (UTC)

Monksedit source

pre-Legionedit source

No, it isn't. Big Bang Generation says that Benny's been living on Legion a year, and that The Lights of Skaro was years ago. Also Peter's a little boy in The Revolution, while he's basically an adult on Legion. Fwhiffahder 22:42, August 28, 2016 (UTC)

The Doctor looked at her. ‘In your timeline, when did we last meet before all this kicked off?’ ‘Years ago. On Skaro. Ace stole an Omega device.’
And, later:
Ruth had known Peter for a year now,
I don't really feel like listening to The Revolution again atm. I say let's go with what Scott Handcock says anyway, because Big Bang Generation is stupid and I don't like Gary Russell. Fwhiffahder 19:51, August 29, 2016 (UTC)

Bovriledit source

Hi, I'm trying to figure out what Bovril is. Out of three references I found, only one seems to have a potential of being informative. It is the mention on Albertine, which you made. Do you by any chance remember if any info is contained there? The other two mentions, if you're interested are in COMIC: Prologue: The First Doctor and Terrorformer. Thanks in advance. Amorkuz 00:19, March 18, 2017 (UTC)

Thanks. Fortunately for me, CoT already created the page while I was sleeping, and it looks very nice. Amorkuz 12:18, March 18, 2017 (UTC)

President during Doom Coalitionedit source

Funny what good timing you have, I was just checking before going to bed. I can't say 100% for Songs of Love, but I have heard The Eleven many times and I'm quite sure the president is referred to as being male in that. I suspect you've heard Songs of Love a bit more recently than I have, are you sure the President's a she?

Even if she is female, that really doesn't mean it's Livia, cuz Livia's right after Romana. Tim Treloar is established as being the President as recently as Death of Hope, I think. CoT ? 06:18, March 27, 2017 (UTC)

OK, you're right. I'm wrong. Definitely a female president. But I still don't think one can automatically assume that Lady President (Doom Coalition) is Livia. We really don't know much about this president other than the fact that she negotiates with the Monan and dies. CoT ? 12:19, March 27, 2017 (UTC)

Re: Hugoedit source

This is probably the best variation of your uploaded image that we will be able to pull. This doesn't, however, make it the best image possible for the page.

Hey, your new upload looks pretty alright, except for a couple things.

On this site it's best to crop things to be as close to 16:9 as possible. Furthermore, our images are requested to be under 100kb in size. This is so phone-users will not have a trouble viewing our images. Thus, I've cropped your image mainly to the character's head, and I've corrected the width so that it is under 100kb.

In general, we also strive to use .jpg outputs as often as possible. Unless we request a transparent background for aesthetic reasons, we try to always go for .jpg and not .png. It's almost assured that .png images without a clear purpose are going to be deleted at some point. Thus I have entirely re-uploaded the image in a .jpg format.

Now, if you actually have the episode that this image is pulled from, this might not be the best choice for an infobox. We usually want to have the main character's facing into the article. As an infobox is on the right side of a page, this means that we seek to use images that face left. I usually say that the very first thing that you want to search for in a good infobox/general article image is a facial expression that shows personality. I would say a fault in the image at the right, even after corrections and cropping, is that it's just a blank "Listening to the Doctor talk" face. Perhaps the actor only has this face, and I'm expecting too much of his performance, but it's an important topic to raise. However, god forbid, no one is asking you to watch any more of The Twin Dilemna than you already have.

Finally, when you upload an image you're going to want to add the proper categories to help with sorting and finding images. In this case, I've added Category:The Twin Dilemma TV story images and Category:TARDIS interior images to both versions.

For any other hints or tips, I suggest checking out Thread:148148. OS25 (Talk) 16:47, May 1, 2017 (UTC)

Bot warningedit source

I'm really sorry, but I have no practical way to warn people when the bot is active. We have thousands of editors who edit in every time zone on the planet. Even if I started, I dunno, a forum thread or something, there's no guarantee that people would read it before the bot run was finished. Also, I have no idea what's on people's followed lists, nor any practical way to find out. Thus, I can't tell whether or not the edits would even be of interest to them. And, even if you personally were warned, you'd still get a ton of emails in a short period of time.

If you're following that many pages, and receiving mail about them all, I'd suggest one of two options for you.

First, you could set up a mail rule that put all mail that contains certain words in the subject into a folder of its own. I don't get followed page emails myself, so I forget what the subject line is for that email, but it's a standard one that you could make an email rule around. That should stop your phone from "blowing up", but also keep these emails around for your later review.

Second, you could choose, in your Special:Preferences, to only be emailed a Weekly Digest of the changes to your followed pages. That way you'd only get one comprehensive list per week, which would be much easier to search than going through thousands of individual pieces of mail.

War Doctor Companionsedit source

There's a plan now to revamp all templates. It appears that different users understood the description differently. I'd like to unify it, if at all possible. And obviously the way to do it is to start with the simple and stabilised ones. I'll get to the War Doctor eventually. Perhaps, the best way is to put all proposed companions to the talk pages (I think these two are already there). I also saw someone propose Alice. And I'll make sure to check all the proposals. Although I reserve the right to decline espeacially fish-y ones. :) Amorkuz 15:19, May 4, 2017 (UTC)

If we're all editors, they're all actorsedit source

Actor

Use for both male and female actors; do not use actress except when in name of award, eg Oscar for best actress. The Guardian’s view is that actress comes into the same category as authoress, comedienne, manageress, “lady doctor”, “male nurse” and similar obsolete terms that date from a time when professions were largely the preserve of one sex (usually men). As Whoopi Goldberg put it in an interview with the paper: “An actress can only play a woman. I’m an actor – I can play anything.”

There is normally no need to differentiate between the sexes – and if there is, the words male and female are perfectly adequate: Lady Gaga won a Brit in 2010 for best international female artist, not artiste, chanteuse, or songstress.

As always, use common sense: a piece about the late film director Carlo Ponti was edited to say that in his early career he was “already a man with a good eye for pretty actors ...” As the readers’ editor pointed out in the subsequent clarification: “This was one of those occasions when the word ‘actresses’ might have been used”The Guardian and Observer style guide. Liviaedit source

Hey there. I can't remember the reference myself, but I'm planning a relisten. I was reading the pages for River Song and I think the Eleven, which both mention the stealing of Livia's TARDIS, so to be completionist I moved the info into Livia's actual page. There's definately no reference to her being president though, I would definately have remembered that being in the story.

Thanks. --Revan\Talk 09:25, June 25, 2017 (UTC)

A request for helpedit source

Since you've listened to the whole new audio range, I just wanted to ask if you found any little hints to where The Tenth Doctor Adventures: Volume Two take place in Series 2? A name drop to Mickey that places them before School Reunion? The Doctor talking about his new body? Referencing a past adventure or enemy; I don't think Rose mentioning the Cybermen can count now that The Bidding War shows she met them with the Ninth Doctor. So far all I've got to work with is Rose's outfits being from New Earth and Rise of the Cybermen, but that's a bit of a stretch. I hope this message isn't an inconvenience, and I apologies if it is. Thank you for reading it, though. Sincerely, BananaClownMan 15:17, November 28, 2017 (UTC).

Thank you for the reply. It was most helpful.BananaClownMan 13:12, November 29, 2017 (UTC)

Bennyedit source

Thanks. I was wondering if you couldn't resolve the discrepancy between the website and the companion regarding the third release? The BF website states November 1998, but the companion gives January 1999. Given that the recording happened at the beginning of November, the latter is more plausible. I wonder if the physical CD does not have an answer. Amorkuz 17:22, December 8, 2017 (UTC)

Yep, it solves it. Thanks. January 1999 it is. Between us, release dates are not always trustworthy on the BF website, which is a pity. I have a feeling that their content processing engine uses these dates to order search results. So since they stuck The Plague Herds of Excelis as #3.0 now, they moved its released date earlier to February 2002 to put it before #3.1 (wiki has July 2002). I have a strong suspicion, that ours is the correct one. Amorkuz 19:43, December 8, 2017 (UTC)

Director of Just Waredit source

Sorry to bother you again. (Though feels just like old times.) There is another discrepancy between the BF website and the BF Companion. The wiki and the website name Gary Russell as the director of Just War whereas the Companion has Nicholas Briggs. If you have time and the CD, could you check the CD? Amorkuz 08:56, December 9, 2017 (UTC)

Thanks. What a mess. It seems that the only sane thing is to remove it from the infobox and record both versions stating sources for each. If you by any chance remember which podcast, feel free to add it as a source. But don't spend time trying to find out. By the policy T:NO SELF REF, Nick Briggs claiming he directed this audio is not really a valid source. Amorkuz 10:25, December 9, 2017 (UTC)

Buried Treasuresedit source

Dare I hope that you might have access to this extremely rare of releases, Buried Treasures? There are certain things I hold as suspect in the Big Finish Companion. It would be good to double check. Amorkuz 20:30, December 9, 2017 (UTC)

Sorry, I try too many projects at once. At least you don't have a time machine. But yes, I think the audios are also useful. I hope you might shed light on the following questions:
  • the BFC gives duration as 63:54 for Making Myths and 63:56 for Closure. I find it hard to believe that one CD that long ago could contain more than 2 hours of tracks (and that is not taking into account the interviews). Could they mean 33:54 and 33:56?
  • the wiki page for Buried Treasures claims that it contains interviews with both Gary Russell and Paul Cornell, whereas the BFC only mentions Cornell. Do you have Russell too?

Thanks in advance. Amorkuz 23:22, December 11, 2017 (UTC)

Oh, that really helps (and makes sense). There's nothing like source material. Thanks. Amorkuz 22:13, December 12, 2017 (UTC)

RE: Starship of Theseusedit source

Re:Romana/Trey Mergeedit source

Yeah, I reread that thread right before putting up the merge. But it never really came to a steady resolution; there was no official decision to merge the two Romana IIIs and keep the Matrix projection on her own page; the only reason it's currently that way is because after the release of Enemy Lines User:JagoAndLitefoot took it upon themself to move the Luna Romana / Intervention Earth information on Trey over to Romana III. A decision which I support, and which I think was long overdue at that point; the only mistake was to leave the Matrix project information behind. (Note that there's still a "As a projection" section in JAL's Romana III Sandbox.) But that just means the lingering existence of Trey is by accident, not design. And I think my point still stands that other Matrix projections of Time Lords haven't been exiled to separate pages (case in point). So yeah, that's why I added the merge template. – N8 22:16, February 23, 2018 (UTC)

Just to be clear, there's nothing wrong with the functionality of the preload template dropdown right now. When I say I'm going to fiddle with the CSS, I mean that I'm going to make purely cosmetic alterations. Those may or may not come in a few days. Please feel free to test out the feature now.

Oh No It Isn't!edit source

Hey, I think you worked a lot on this story. I'm thinking of making modifications. But I haven't read the book (yet), so it might be that my information is simply incomplete. Thus, I'm gonna run the proposed changes by you and, if you do not object, will get to it. Firstly, I believe that Pantoland is not a planet but a kind of virtual reality and that it is based on the Winton rather than on the planet Perfecton. Secondly, I do not see the point in separate pages for King Rupert, Prince Charming or Dame Candy. They are temporary personas for Balsam, Prince and Arthur Candy respectively. If there is no separate page for Auton Rory, there seems to be little point creating a page for them. Maybe the Fairy Godfather warrants a page, being a manifestation of a computer rather than a person. Please let me know if you object to any of this. Amorkuz 22:53, September 21, 2018 (UTC)

I knew it is better to compare notes before editing. (I also only listened to it once and planning a second time.) So regarding the placement of Pantoland, here is my understanding: the whole Perfecton culture was put into a rocket that pierced the board computer of Winton, merged with the file on panto Benny was planning to look at. The point of the rocket was to turn all the crew into Perfectons so that they can get away from the supernova on the spacecraft. So while the ontological status of Pantoland is a bit fuzzy, it seemed to me that it is happening on Winton / within Winton's computer. As for the people, on first listening I had a slightly different impression: namely, that crew members assumed these roles within the Pantoland and at first had no recollection of their real selves. It is definite that Wolsey at some point, under a hypnotic or some such influence, recalls himself being a mere cat. There is a whole plot point about him not wanting to revert to his cat-state and him confirming Benny's suspicions that he normally treats her as a servant woman. I have a vague recollection that the other members of the crew also have a glimpse of their true selves when Benny manages to press the button without the lamp. She also assigns various computer systems as being represented by various monsters in Pantoland. I wonder what the book says... Amorkuz 15:16, September 22, 2018 (UTC)
I'm glad we agree. Let me just find time to do the merge. Amorkuz 22:57, September 28, 2018 (UTC)

Dab termsedit source

Hey there, I'm a big fan of your work on the wiki, but there's one thing I've noticed: recently you've created a few pages like Jan and Pathologist that should have dab terms but don't. The general rule of thumb is that people with non-unique names, or who are credited only as their job titles, get dab terms for the story they're in. This also applies to pages like Louie and Television Announcer, since there are tons of television announcers in the DWU (just type "Television announcer" into the search box!) I recognize that these people are credited in this way, but it doesn't mean that they shouldn't get dab terms. For the pages I've mentioned I've manually fixed the links and prepped them for speedy rename, so no worries, but just something to please keep in mind going forward. – n8 () 19:43, 16 March 2021 (UTC)

The Hollow Crownedit source

Hi, I noticed you added some info about The Hollow Crown on William Shakespeare's page back in January. There's nothing wrong with the edit itself but it did raise some questions about the story which could affect how we treat Shakespeare on the Wiki. Can you tell me if it contradicts, re-asserts or remains ambiguous with regard to the events of The Kingmaker? If you haven't listened to that one, the main headlines are that Shakespeare takes the place of Richard III at the Battle of Bosworth while Richard takes Shakespeare's place in 1597 and that the daughters of Edward IV Susan and Judith are also brought forward in time to pretend to be Shakespeare's daughters. Additionally, I'm intrigued by your mention of an "uncut" version of Richard III as that play was a major plot point of The Kingmaker. Obviously this is not an urgent query so please do take your time and reply at your leisure. Thanks in advance, Borisashton 22:14, 13 May 2022 (UTC)

I've had to go through all the pages you've created in the last four years to make sure they're all linked. Jack "BtR" Saxon 22:30, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Re: Cite Source edge case/problemedit source

Sorry for the late response. I've been abroad and so away from my computer from Monday to Wednesday and was ill on Thursday. The relevant documentation is at Template:Infobox Story SMW. In particular, the |contributors= override variable should probably be used here. See this edit. The only issue is that changes the label from "Writer:" to the plural "Writers:" but I have plans to implement a feature that would get around this in the not too distant future once I've worked through a current backlog of edits that need to be made beforehand. The Quin Dilemmaedit source

Hi. Thanks for adding info from this story to the wiki, but I've noticed a couple of things.

  • "Quin" isn't the brothers' surname - they're called that because they are (believed to be) quintuplets.
  • The fifth brother's name is probably spelt "Ervis" and not "Urvis" given that his brothers' names begin with A, B, C and D. His name probably follows that pattern.
  • You've flip-flopped between spellings for their planet. It's spelt "Arunopal".
  • You can't put multiple people in the infobox fields for Child, Brother or Sister. They all have to have a separate field i.e. Child, Child2, Child3, etc.

Thanks. Jack 18:17, 19 May 2024 (UTC)
