Winstanley gave the Third Doctor and Jo Grant directions to the Devil's Hump, and asked the Doctor whether he was one of "those television chaps", much to the Doctor's resentment.

The Master met Winstanley in the vicarage and told him to start behaving like the squire and arrange a meeting of the villagers, but Winstanley refused. The Master then caused a wind to sweep through the house, proving to Winstanley that he controlled the powers that had been released in Devil's End over the last few hours. Winstanley agreed to do anything the Master said.
