Casper Knox was a lieutenant in the 73rd Regiment of Foot, a veteran of the Battle of Waterloo, and a samurai under Lord Takagi Mamoru.

Leaving the British army at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Knox went looking for other wars and a better pay. Upon his arrival in Japan, he was thrown in Mamoru's prison for 8 months, before he was given the chance to either serve Mamoru or to be burnt alive. He eventually became a samurai, elevating his position to chief. As Westerners were forbidden from being in Japan under sakoku, Knox disguised his face with a red mash when outside of Nagomi Castle, wearing red armour and a red mask, earning him the nickname "Aka-san", or "mr red". (AUDIO: The Barbarians and the Samurai)
