Consul Tremas was a Trakenite scientist who served as an appointed governor of Traken and, briefly, Keeper-Nominate. He and his daughter Nyssa assisted the Fourth Doctor when the Decayed Master attempted to take control of the Source of Traken. Although unsuccessful, the Master managed to use some of the energy he had absorbed to merge with Tremas, killing him and giving the Master a new body at last.
Biography
Early life
Born circa 1936, (TV: Logopolis; PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken) Tremas was a scientist with an interest in bioelectronics who was appointed as a consul to the Keeper of Traken. (TV: The Keeper of Traken) Some time after the death of his father, (AUDIO: The Toy) he and his wife, Lucina, had a daughter named Nyssa. (TV: The Keeper of Traken)
Lucina died in childbirth (PROSE: Empire of Death) or whilst Nyssa was still young, (AUDIO: The Haunting of Thomas Brewster) after which Tremas stopped cultivating his extensive gardens. (PROSE: Asylum) He raised Nyssa on his own, (AUDIO: The Orphan) his position having the consequence of her spending much of her time with older people. She inherited Tremas's love of science (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken) and his interest in bioelectronics. (TV: Castrovalva)
Marriage
By 1981, (TV: Logopolis) Tremas had entered into a romantic relationship with fellow consul Kassia. (TV: The Keeper of Traken) He would play her a particular piece of Trakenite music when she was feeling low, one which Nyssa would remember fondly. (AUDIO: The Entropy Composition) Tremas and Kassia married and had their union blessed by the Keeper, who named Tremas as Keeper-Nominate, (TV: The Keeper of Traken) something that did not surprise him and which he knew would separate him from his family. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken)
Fighting the Master
Tremas attempted to use science to solve the death of a Foster and detected the Decayed Master's influence on Traken. He trusted the Fourth Doctor and Adric, taking them under his protection through Consular Privilege when they were suspected of wrongdoing, and was replaced as Keeper-Nominate by Kassia when she claimed that he had concealed information and named the newcomers as servants of the Melkur. He assisted the Doctor, Adric and Nyssa in thwarting the Master, who killed Kassia and became Keeper. (TV: The Keeper of Traken)
Death
Following the Master's defeat, Tremas and Nyssa bid farewell to the Doctor and Adric before the new Keeper was inaugurated. Before joining Nyssa and Katura and helping to restore Traken, Tremas investigated a grandfather clock and was trapped by the Master who, using what little powers of the Keepership he still had, was able to take over his body — killing him in the process. (TV: The Keeper of Traken)
Legacy
Nyssa sent a message to the Doctor's TARDIS telling him of Tremas's disappearance, prompting him to correctly determine what had happened to him. She soon encountered the Master in her father's body, (TV: Logopolis) which he would eventually lose either by regeneration (PROSE: First Frontier) or due to having it stripped from him by the Warp Core. (AUDIO: Dust Breeding)
Nyssa subconsciously blamed the Doctor for what had happened to her father. (AUDIO: Psychodrome) Due to the Trakenite belief in the connection between the soul and the body, she believed that Tremas could never be at peace while the Master was using his form. (PROSE: Empire of Death) The Garden of the Dead almost recreated Tremas from Nyssa's memories, but instead, a replica of the Master in Tremas's body was created. (AUDIO: Gardens of the Dead) Later in life, Nyssa used her father's name as her personal password. (AUDIO: Heroes of Sontar)
Personality
Tremas was a firm believer in science and understanding over the Trakens' traditional superstitions (TV: The Keeper of Traken) and, as a result, was seen as somewhat eccentric. He rarely encountered like-minded people, (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken) aside from his daughter, (AUDIO: The Orphan, etc.) and was thus pleased to meet the Fourth Doctor. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken)
His opinions differed from Kassia, who was more superstitious, (TV: The Keeper of Traken) but he hated to oppose her, particularly when she was in one of her nervous states. Upon being appointed Keeper-Nominate, he was upset that he would have to leave her and Nyssa, but knew that it was his responsibility to do so. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken) Unlike most Trakens, Tremas was not afraid to show his feelings. (PROSE: Empire of Death)
Appearance
In his forties, Tremas was a tall and impressive man (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken) with twinkly eyes, (PROSE: Divided Loyalties) a strong, handsome face and grey streaks in his brown hair and beard. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Keeper of Traken)
Behind the scenes
- "Tremas" is an anagram of "Master".
- In the subtitles for the highlights of BSB's Doctor Who Weekend released as part of the DVD release of The Three Doctors, Tremas's name is erroneously spelled as "Petrimos".
