By one account, it was created by the Vlad the Great, who was personally known as "the Dragon"; (AUDIO: Son of the Dragon [+]Loading...["Son of the Dragon (audio story)"]) by another account, its founder was Holy Roman Emperor Sigismund of Hungary.
The Order had ties to the Society of St George. The emblem of the Order was a dragon suspended from a crucifix, reminiscent of the St George legend.
