Tarper was one of the original colonists on Pteran and now led the colony. She didn't believe the Eighth Doctor's story. She was harvesting the tree sap to make a fortune. It kept her young, but she joined the telepathic field of the trees as a consequence. Because she drunk enough of it, the Hellstrung caused her to metamorphise into the tree she damaged.
