In 1982, Atom Comics purchased the rights to publish new The Man stories, and Jim Sheldrake reinvented the series to significant critical acclaim. After Sheldrake left Atom in 1984, ending the series on a cliffhanger, Atom CEO Del Rictus asked Gideon Barrow to become the new head writer.
