The Kanowa research station was located in Australia. It was controlled by Ramón Salamander, but was controlled by Theodore Benik when Salamander was away.
An underground shelter was built under it by Salamander and Giles Kent, with several scientists being put in the shelter to cause "natural" disasters.
When Kent was exposed by the Second Doctor, he went into a tunnel system located underneath the station, planning to destroy the station with a explosive device located in the tunnels. After he was shot by Salamander, he activated the explosive device, but the ensuring explosion only damaged the research station. (TV: The Enemy of the World)
Behind the scenes[[edit] | [edit source]]
The first time the research station is mentioned, in the video-wire of Salamander addressing the United Zones Authority, Salamander says it is at "Kanowna". Every subsequent reference to it, including signage visible on screen when the action moves to the research station, places it at "Kanowa".
Kanowa is not a location in the real world, but Kanowna is in Western Australia, approximately 500km north of Cape Arid, the other named Australian location mentioned in the serial.
