He fell in love with her. He told this to [[Henry Wotton]] and they along with [[Basil Hallward]] viewed her performance of Juliet in [[Romeo and Juliet]]. This started his realisation of his wish around the portrait. The Master revealed to him that he knew about the portrait. He asked the Master to travel back in time before Sibyl's death using [[The Master's TARDIS]]. He then asked to travel to the court of [[Elagabalus]] which he saw in a painting. After this he made several trips with the Master. Dorian came to learn that he was a character from a novel and had to act out the significant plot points. He encountered the the hypnotised Sibyl not knowing he was. Their meeting realised the Master's influence in their lives. The Master wanted to take Dorian's immortality.
