Tyler, (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"], PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth (novelisation)"]) first name Carl (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"]) or Jim, (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth (novelisation)"]) was a freedom fighter on Earth during the Daleks' 2150s invasion of Earth.
Biography
Tyler, whose first name was either Carl (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"]) or Jim, (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth (novelisation)"]) experienced a lot of death during the Daleks' occupation of Earth, resulting in him acting abrupt and having no interest in making new friends.
In 2167, Tyler came across Susan Foreman on his way back to headquarters from spying on Helipad Chelsea and took her with him to safety, promising her and Barbara Wright that they would do the best they could to collect the First Doctor and Ian Chesterton as well. He informed Dortmun of the arrival of a flying saucer at the heliport and was initially sceptical of Dortmun's plan of attack. However, he was confident that Barbara's plan to pose as Robomen and prisoners would work.
During the attack, Tyler boarded the flying saucer and, with Baker and David Campbell's help, rescued the Doctor and escaped. He decided that it was too dangerous to remain in London and chose to head north, running into David, Susan and the Doctor in the sewers on the way and travelling with them to Bedfordshire. He helped to evacuate people from the Dalek control centre before its destruction.
Tyler returned to the firebombed London and wished that Dortmun and others like him could have been there to see Earth's liberation. The Doctor tasked him with helping to rebuild the world in their memory and, before leaving, Tyler told David to make sure that he saw him before heading off. Personality
Having known a lot of killing, Tyler was afraid to make friends (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"]) and thus had a curt and brusque manner. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth (novelisation)"]) Susan found him abrupt and hoped that she would never end up pretending not to care like Tyler did. (TV: The Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["The Dalek Invasion of Earth (TV story)"])
Appearance
As a middle-aged man, Tyler was burly and tough-looking. (PROSE: Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth [+]Loading...["Doctor Who and the Dalek Invasion of Earth (novelisation)"])
