Ringway was a crew member on a massive space freighter in the middle of space.

He did not really like Captain Briggs because she ignored him. When everyone found out that he was working with the Cybermen, he held Captain Briggs, Berger, Adric and the Doctor hostage.

When the Cybermen found out that there were more than ten crew members when Scott and his troops moved in, they killed Ringway because they thought he had lied. (DW: Earthshock)
