The Cybermen were a race of artificially modified human or near-humans.

History

A Cyberman army was buried under the ice in the Arctic Circle and had been for tens of thousands of years after being hit by a temporal storm. An excavation began to awaken the army, releasing Cybermats which in turn created Cyberslaves. The Eleventh Doctor arrived on May 4th 2010 and stopped their awakening. He blew up their base and put them back into stasis. (VG: Blood of the Cybermen)

The Doctor acquired a chest plate from one of these Cybermen and kept it in the TARDIS drawing room. (VG: TARDIS)

Behind the scenes

  • It was not stated whether these Cybermen were of the Mondasian or Cybus kind. They greatly resemble the Cybus Cybermen (but with a stylised logo of a Cyberman's head instead of the Cybus logo) and are said to be brains in metal shells ala the Cybus creations. However, a "Who Fact" on Cybermen in the game refers solely to the Mondasian Cybermen, while another on Cyber-Biology refers first to Cybermen and then "the Cybermen created by John Lumic" as if they're a different group; the Cybermats, their awareness of the fact that the Doctor is a Time Lord, and his reference to "races" conquered by them further indicate that they are the Mondasian versions. However, the Cybus Cybermen also seemed aware of the Doctor and who he was when they joined the Alliance and also have a vast fleet of ships, indicating that they have captured and converted more species. Furthermore, their Electro Attack more greatly resembles the Mondasian one seen in The Moonbase and The Tomb of the Cybermen than the Cybus one, as it is a ranged attack.
    • Cybermen resembling the Cybus kind but acting like Mondasians would also appear in The Pandorica Opens (but with the Cybus logo) and A Good Man Goes to War (without), and Peter Hoare confirms the latter are "different Cybermen" to the Cybus race. [1] The Cybermen from two or all of these three stories may be the same Cybermen.
  • It is unknown how the Doctor acquired the chest plate seen in TARDIS. As the short script Wish You Were Here occurs directly after Blood of the Cybermen and leads directly into TARDIS (where the chest plate is seen), there is no time for the Doctor to take a chest plate and he is not seen carrying out out of the GSO base at the end of Blood. It is possible that he has encountered these Cybermen before in an unseen adventure.
