Where are we getting that they're an actual species — as opposed to just being "humans from the planet Peladon"? Seems to me that "Peladonian" or "Pel" is just a demonym. Does anyone have definite proof that they're a distinct species?

Doctor Who and the Curse of Peladon, Legacy and The Prisoner of Peladon consistently use "Pel".
The Monster of Peladon uses "Pel" twice and "Peladonian" once.
