The Jal Karath were a weed-like species from Jal Paloor.
Biology[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Jal Karath looked like a mass of thin, twinning weeds attached to a thicker stalk. The body was covered in clusters of white eyes. They were a long lived species, living for centuries without difficulties. They had fluting and high pitched voices. (PROSE: Ghosts of India)
Culture[[edit] | [edit source]]
The Jal Karath were organised into eleven hives, which were subdivided into nucleus colonies and were led by a Hive Council. The hive of a Jal Karath could be identified by the number at the end of their name (e.g. Darac-7 was from Hive Seven). When shortened, Jal Karath names were made from the first name and the hive number.
The Jal Karath measured time in two known methods: Quadrants and Cycles. The 93rd Quadrant was equivalent to the 16th century and Cycles were equivalent to months. (PROSE: Ghosts of India)
Technology[[edit] | [edit source]]
Jal Karath technology looked distinctive, with black walls with jagged angles. Wires and tubing connected the Jal Karath to the ship and other sections of the ship, allowing the Jal Karath to control devices easily.
The Jal Karath also had access to A-class pulse fliers for transport, Zytron energy for power, Glamour technology for defence, Mezon disintegrator 7.5s for weaponry, Transmat Pods for teleportation and the technology to create Gelem warriors. (PROSE: Ghosts of India)
History[[edit] | [edit source]]
At some point in history, Veec-Ellic-Savareen-Jal-9 criticised the Hive Council, claiming they were cruel tyrants. For this, his nucleus colony was destroyed and he was branded as a traitor. He was chased for 11 Quadrants, until 1947, when he arrived on Earth. He believed that he had managed to escape his pursuers and settled down in Calcutta, India, living as a human.
Three months later, Darac-Poul-Caparrel-Jal-7 came to Calcutta, looking for Veec-9. He also planned to kidnap people and make them into Gelem warriors, which he would then sell to the Hive Council. With this force, the Hive Council planned to spread out and conquer. When the Tenth Doctor and Donna Noble accidentally came to Calcutta, the Doctor started investigating both the mutations caused by Darac-7's ship's Zytron energy and the kidnapping by the Gelem warriors. When he found Darac-7, Darac-7 claimed that Veec-9 was the criminal and that he needed help finding him. Agreeing to help him, the Doctor returned to the TARDIS to help the search, but this was just a ploy by Darac-7 so he could find out the source of the Doctor's technology.
At this point, Darac-7 decided to start a mass kidnapping, planning to collect 5,000 humans. With the help of Veec-9, the Doctor and his companions were able to track down Darac-7's ship and free the captured people. When the Doctor, Ranjit and Mohandas Gandhi tried to confront Darac-7, they were captured and sent to be turned into Gelem warriors. When Gandhi was put into the extractor, it was shut down, and since the whole ship was interconnected, the whole ship was then shut down. The Doctor then redirected the energy, destroying the ship and killing Darac-7. (PROSE: Ghosts of India)
