Mighty Joe Young was a movie from 20th century Earth. During a 2010 pub quiz at the Black Swan in Cheldon Bonniface, it was the answer the quiz masters expected to the question, "What was the sequel to King Kong?" In fact, though, several quiz-goers — including the Seventh Doctor and Jason Kane — disagreed with this assessment. They insisted Kong had no sequel. (PROSE: Happy Endings)

Also, the same people worked on the special effects in both movies, giving them a similar look. However, this is not a sequel to King. The film's sequel is in actuality Son of Kong.
