Hinks was an employee of Global Chemicals. He served as Jocelyn Stevens' chauffeur and bodyguard.

Stevens ordered Hinks to prevent anyone from going down into the mines, so he sabotaged the lowering mechanism for the lift. He and two security guards later caught the Third Doctor inside the facility, but the Doctor disabled them with Venusian aikido.

Hinks informed Stevens that there were rumours in the village that the Doctor had taken a giant maggot egg from the mine. Stevens then instructed him to go to the Wholeweal community to recover the egg, but Hinks was attacked by the hatched maggot. He became infected with Global Chemicals pollutants and later died.
