Doc Gallifrey was the version of the Eighth Doctor in one parallel universe. He was the gun-toting protector of Vortex City.

Doc Gallifrey had a "history" with "the man in black".
The Doc once walked down Salvation Street, whistling a "slow tune" before facing off against the man in black, with the townsfolk praying and placing bets. Doc Gallifrey lost this confrontation, being shot before seeing his opponent draw his gun. The Eighth Doctor of another universe briefly experienced these events when he was shown his various possible lives by the Glory.
