Thomas Edward "Tom" Hawthorne (1913-25 December 1968) was a human scientist who worked at a radio telescope on the moors near Crook Marsham. He held racist views but they were thought of as common during that era. He was killed by the Sentience in the form of one of his childhood fears; a Tar Baby killed him. (PROSE: Nightshade, AUDIO: Nightshade)

Another account suggested that he was much younger as he was a boy in the 1950s. He was a fan of the science fiction television series Nightshade. As a boy, he wanted to be Professor Nightshade. He believed that watching the series was what originally got him interested in science. (AUDIO: Nightshade)
